HERRENCHIEMSEE Ludwig’s Palace on the Lake for a production of Anna Karenina 1984

Built in the 1800’s, but in the Baroque style, this was Ludwig II ’s version of his own private Versailles. He spent a good part of his personal fortune on a series of architectural fantasies, for which he was hounded by his ministers. These fantasies, currently bring in the largest money flow (from tourism) the Bavarian government have, ironically, vindicated him . A trip there was to film the raising of the chandeliers in the great hall, happening only once a year in the summer. A boat must be taken to the small island on which the palace stands.
